Public key infrastructure of the Banco de España

The Banco de España uses Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology to increase the level of confidence when exchanging information with its users by telematic means. Said technology allows you to communicate with the BdE with the utmost security guarantees, adding authentication, integrity, confidentiality and non-repudiation services to the communication. In a PKI, each user must have an electronic certificate and its corresponding private key.

Therefore, Banco de España users must hold an electronic certificate to access certain telematic services. For this reason, the Banco de España:

  • On the one hand, has become a Certification Service Provider as per the requirements laid down in Spanish legislation on electronic signatures. This allows it to issue electronic signatures for its users when necessary. The Bank's PKI is known as PKIBDE.
  • On the other hand, it accepts electronic certificates issued by certain external Certification Service Providers. In this way, Banco de España users who already have a certificate issued by one of these Providers can use it to communicate with the Bank.
